Der N.I.C.E.

Der N.I.C.E.

Der N.I.C.E.

Ten cultural projects from five nations, which have a particularly innovative spillover effect on society are on the shortlist for the N.I.C.E. Award 2014; four of these projects come from the Ruhr area. The N.I.C.E. Award will be presented by NRW Minister for Economy, Energy, Industry, Trade and Crafts Garrelt Duin on 12 June at the 3rd Forum d’Avignon Ruhr at GOP Variety Theater in Essen. The projects will be exhibited at City Messehalle Essen from 10 to 28. June.

The international jury consisting of Pia Areblad (TILLT, Sweden), Charles Landry (Comedia, UK), Prof. Kurt Mehnert (Folkwang University of the Arts, Germany) and Janjaap Ruijssenaars (Universe Architecture, the Netherlands), chose from 108 submissions from 22 nations to nominate ten projects with the most innovative spillover effects. Another project was given a special award and will also form part of the exhibition.
The N.I.C.E. Award is issued by ecce and the Network for Innovations in Culture and Creativity in Europe (N.I.C.E.), which was initiated in 2013. The award in the amount of EUR 10,000 in total is sponsored by the Ministry for Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sport of the State of North Rhine- Westphalia and the cities of Bochum, Dortmund, Essen and Gelsenkirchen.

Art, culture and creativity are important sources of inspiration for society, the economy and science. The European Union regards the phenomenon of positive effects on other areas as so-called spillover effects and appeals to its member states to make cultural and creative strength visible and to promote innovative effects in fields such as urban development, climate and education. That’s why the N.I.C.E. Award 2014 honours innovative spillover projects from Europe. This year, companies from the cultural scene, self-employed creative artists, creative-economic players, scientific institutions, researchers with a particular interest in culture, and cultural political bodies and institutions were asked to apply for the award with their cultural projects and culture-related research projects and to submit their cultural and creative-economic strategies on spillover innovations.
